The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) will assist the special committee, established to look into empowering syariah criminal law, by providing suggestions and ideas.
Its chairperson Aziz Mohd Yusof said this is in line with the decree by Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to give the committee a chance to do its task.
“Mais is committed to assisting the special committee by providing suggestions and ideas to facilitate the committee’s task of analysing and proposing ways to strengthen the competency of state legislative assemblies to enact syariah criminal provisions within the framework set by the Federal Constitution,” Aziz (above) said in a statement today.
He further urged Muslims to give the committee a chance to do its assigned task.
Yesterday, Sultan Sharafuddin, while chairing the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI)’s 71st meeting, urged for calm following the Federal Court’s recent decision to strike down 16 provisions of the Kelantan syariah criminal code.
On Feb 9, a nine-person Federal Court bench chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat allowed lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid and her daughter Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Tengku Abdul Rahman’s petition to nullify the validity of some of Kelantan’s syariah criminal provisions.
The apex court only allowed 16 out of 18 provisions contained in Nik Elin’s petition to be invalidated.- Mkini
