Serve through PSSC instead of shadow cabinet, Fahmi tells PN

Perikatan Nasional MPs have been advised to focus on serving the people through the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) instead of a shadow cabinet.

Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said the PSSC, which plays the check and balance role, is the best platform for the opposition to monitor the progress of each ministry.

"The shadow cabinet is a concept that is often mentioned. We have not discussed this matter in the cabinet meeting but in principle, in terms of the quality of the arguments made by MPs in the Parliament, that is the benchmark.

“The PSSCs consist of all MPs from various parties. So, it should be fully utilised,” he said during a post-cabinet press conference held at the Communications Ministry in Putrajaya today.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said this in response to a question pertaining to PN’s reshuffled shadow cabinet and whether the government is ready to be scrutinised.

Asked about Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan’s role, who is tasked to oversee the communications portfolio, Fahmi said the government will examine all statements issued by the MPs regarding his ministry.

“At the moment, there is no advantage given to any (MPs).

“However, if there is any matter raised by Wan Saiful or anyone on issues related to the Communications Ministry, of course, it’s my responsibility to answer it in Parliament.

“So, there is nothing special about him (Wan Saiful’s role),” he added.

In Feb last year, PN unveiled its shadow cabinet as it wants to be an “effective and responsible opposition in the country”.

On Feb 8 this year, the coalition then announced a new shadow cabinet but did not reveal its choice for shadow prime minister.

Its secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin was reported as saying that the new line-up was more focused on keeping in line with the changes made in the last cabinet reshuffle last December. - Mkini
