Former Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud has laid a strong foundation for the government to move forward in further developing the territory, said state Pakatan Harapan chairperson Chong Cheng Jen.
"I would like to express my gratitude to his (Taib's) contribution to the development of the state.
"Though we may disagree on certain policies during his tenure as the chief minister, overall, he has contributed tremendously to the development of the state, laying a strong foundation for the present government to take the state to another level," he said on Facebook.
It is worth noting that Chong had been a vocal critic of Taib before, including calling the latter to address numerous allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
Taib breathed his last at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur early this morning. He was 87.
The last rites for Taib were performed at the National Mosque, before his remains were flown back to Kuching, Sarawak.
Following Taib's demise, condolences poured in from ministers, who described it as a great loss to Sarawak and the country.
The Sarawak government declared two days of mourning, during which flags would be flown at half-mast throughout the state, with entertainment events postponed. - Mkini
