'Allah' socks supplier denies local council revoked licence

The factory linked to the sale of socks bearing the word Allah has denied that the Batu Pahat Municipal Council (MPBP) revoked its licence.

In a statement, Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd said the local council gave the company a month to provide a written statement before a decision is taken on the matter.

“On March 19, our representatives were formally invited via WhatsApp to meet with the council chief on March 20.

“During the meeting, we were presented with a notice alleging non-compliance with our business licence conditions, specifically regarding packaging activities of stockings,” the company said today.

“By the same notice, MPBP granted us 30 days from March 20, to submit a written statement before any decision is made regarding our licence,” it added.

The operating licence remains valid until the council considers the written submission, Xi Jian Chang stressed.

“Reports suggesting our licence has been revoked are inaccurate. We are seeking legal advice to safeguard our interests.

“We appreciate the support received from our partners and stakeholders and remain committed to overcoming this challenge. We trust this statement provides clarity,” it added.

30-day suspension

Separately, MCA's Batu Pahat local councillor whip Ter Hwa Kwong also confirmed with Malaysiakini that the local council did not revoke the factory’s licence but ordered a 30-day suspension of operations.

“Its (Xin Jian Chan) licence has not been revoked, only suspended for 30 days.

"(Factory) is in breach of the law and against the regulations regarding its licences, so 30 days will be given to explain.

“(Municipal council) will decide after 30 days," he said.

Factory closed

Yesterday, it was reported that the MPBP had revoked Xin Jian Chang’s operating licence following the brouhaha surrounding the socks bearing the name Allah, which was found at several KK Mart outlets in Petaling Jaya.

The Batu Pahat-based factory was the supplier of the footwear to the convenience store chain.

Taking to Facebook, MPBP said it had handed over the licence revocation notice during a meeting with Xin Jian Chang managing director Soh Hui San, who represented the factory.

Yesterday, the factory announced that it would remain closed until Sunday to ensure the safety of its staff.

In addition, it also displayed a banner on the gate of its factory, expressing regret over the incident, and promising to uphold its commitment to preserving the sensitivities of a multi-religious society.

On Tuesday, Xi Jian Chang also lamented an arson threat against the company, and the leaking of sensitive data, including the personal details of its key officers, online. - Mkini
