Selangor Perikatan Nasional is convinced they can win the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.
Its state youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said one of the factors that can lead them to victory is the majority of voters who are Malay.
“We are confident in seizing the seat which has been DAP’s since 2013.
“The certainty is underpinned by the fact that 51 percent of voters are Malays, and are very friendly towards PN,” he said in a statement today.
The Kuala Kubu Baharu seat fell vacant after the death of its three-term assemblyperson, Lee Kee Hiong who passed away due to her long battle against ovarian cancer on March 21.
Sukri said besides the Malay voters, PN is certain that the youth will also vote for them.
“Young voters, especially the 18-year-olds are well versed in technology and will be exposed to more information. That will lead them to compare (between parties) and will eventually choose PN,” he added.
He added that based on the previous state election in August last year DAP only gained 761 votes against the ones it received in 2018.
Past results
PN had gained 7,437 votes compared to when PAS contested the seat as a third force during the 14th general election.
During the 2018 election, Lee retained her seat with 14,101 votes defeating BN (6,967) and PAS (3,306).
However, by the 2023 state election where Pakatan Harapan and BN were allies, Lee won the seat with 14,862 votes, while PN - which consists of PAS, Bersatu and Gerakan - bagged 10,743 votes.
Overall, DAP’s vote share in Kuala Kubu Baharu slid from 57.8 percent in 2018 to to 54.4 percent in 2023, while PN’s vote share last year was 39.3 percent compared to the 13.6 percent secured by PAS before that.
Sukri said the increased number showed a clear signal that voters are leaning towards PN.
“This would certainly trigger the Harapan and BN coalition.
“Therefore, regardless of who is our candidate, our state youth wing is ready to face the election,” he added.
The Election Commission will hold a special meeting on April 4 to set the date for the by-election. - Mkini
