KUALA LUMPUR: The government is set to announce the new road tax rates for electric vehicles (EVs) in the country next month, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Currently, EV owners are exempted from paying road tax until 2025.

Loke said the government is in the final stages of reviewing the rates, which will be “more appealing” and cheaper than the charges for fuel-based cars.

“This is in line with the government’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and achieve zero emissions by 2050,” he told reporters after launching an event here today.

Loke also said the government is planning to roll out special number plates for EVs purchased after the implementation of the rates.

“For EV users using their existing number plates, we will not force them to switch to new ones.

“Most of them would want to keep their existing number plates as some had bought them,” he said.

Loke also said Prasarana Malaysia Bhd is planning to introduce “vans on demand” at certain MRT and LRT hotspots to serve as last-mile transport for public transport users to reach home.

“We are well aware that the last mile is important and it is an uphill task to cover it in all housing areas.

“The vans, which will be deployed to some MRT and LRT stations, will be used as an alternative for users to reach their last destinations,” he said. - FMT
