The Israeli man arrested in Kuala Lumpur has been named as Shalom Avitan, a hitman who came to Malaysia intending to assassinate the head of a rival crime family.
According to a Times of Israel report quoting Hebrew-language news outlets, Avitan was planning to eliminate Eran Haya.
“According to Channel 12, Avitan’s home in Tel Aviv’s upscale Bavli neighbourhood was the target of several grenades tossed by Haya’s men in mid-March, around when Haya was said to have entered Malaysia,” the Times of Israel said.
On March 12, Malaysian police arrested Avitan at a hotel in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, and seized six firearms and 200 bullets.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said on Friday that the 36-year-old man is believed to have entered Malaysia through the United Arab Emirates on March 12 using a French passport.
The weapons seized included Sig Sauer, Glock-27, Smith & Wesson pistols.
The case is being investigated under Section 12 of the Passport Act and Section 7 of the Firearms Act.
Following the arrest, police have beefed up security for Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and other VIPs, amid the country’s support for Palestine in the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza.
“Our concern is that due to the Palestine-Israel issue, we have to take into account the safety of the king, the prime minister, several VVIPs, and officers,” the IGP said.
Police have also detained a local couple on suspicion of supplying firearms to the suspect. - Mkini
