Kuantan police chief Wan Zahari Wan Busu said the 5am incident at the outlet in Sungai Isap caused several items on display at the front of the store to be set alight, Malaysiakini reported.
The workers at the store were immediately able to put out the blaze using a fire extinguisher.
Wan Zahari said an initial investigation showed that the perpetrator may have thrown the petrol bomb from a distance to avoid being caught by the store’s security cameras.
He said police were checking CCTV recordings from nearby stores and searching the area for evidence.
Earlier this week, a petrol bomb was also thrown at a KK Mart store in Bidor, Perak, at about the same time.
Thrown by a person who has yet to be identified, the petrol bomb landed in front of the store but did not explode.
Staff members were working inside the store when the incident occurred.
Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to intervene in the matter and calm tensions.
“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the sultan of Perak, and the inspector-general of police have spoken up and advised to calm racial and religious tensions.
“The people now call on the prime minister and the home minister as leaders of the unity government to make an executive decision, based on the law,” he said in a statement.
KK Mart’s founder and director, Chai Kee Kan and Loh Siew Mui, were charged in court on Tuesday with intentionally wounding the religious feelings of Muslims by selling socks embroidered with the word “Allah”.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has remained on the offensive since the controversy began, publicly campaigning for a nationwide boycott of the chain.
Umno Youth had, however, condemned the first petrol bomb attack, urging all parties to leave the matter to the police. - FMT
