'Concerned Malaysians' accept KK Marts apology, reject boycott

PETALING JAYA: A group of "concerned Malaysians," including academicians, activists and ex-politicians, say that they accept the apology given by KK Super Mart over the socks controversy.

"We uphold the investigation of the authorities and await the final outcome and punishment by the authorities," said the group in a statement, adding that they rejected Umno's decision to support a boycott of the convenience store chain.

The group of 23, whose members span across all ethnicities, faiths and regions including Sarawak and Sabah, condemned Umno's decision to support a boycott of KK Super Mart.

Their statement followed Umno's decision to support its youth chief Dr Akmal Salleh, who had publicly campaigned for a boycott of all KK Super Mart stores after socks bearing the term Allah were found in one of its stores last week.

Akmal had been calling for a boycott of the retail chain's stores even after its management swiftly retracted the socks, publicly apologised for the mistake and cancelled its contract with the sock supplier.

Among those who had signed the group's statement are academicians Prof Dr Mohd Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi, Dr Lim Teck Ghee and Dr James Chin, ex-Sungai Benut MP Tawfik Tun Dr Ismail, writers Dr KJ John and E. S. Shankar and lawyer Siti Kassim. - Star
