Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been discharged from the National Heart Institute (IJN) this morning, 53 days after he was admitted for an infection.
According to a brief statement by his office, Mahathir was released from the hospital at 11.30am today.
“Mahathir had been discharged from the IJN at 11.30am today. He was admitted on Jan 26, 2024, for treatment of infection and observation,” the statement said.
An aide to the veteran politician confirmed that Mahathir was discharged by IJN following his recovery from the infection.
Mahathir, who is the nation’s longest-serving prime minister, has a history of heart illnesses and has undergone several heart surgeries in the past.
His admission to IJN this time led to the hearing of his defamation suit against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Feb 13 to be adjourned to July 19.
Mahathir sued Zahid for allegedly raising doubts regarding his ancestry to damage his reputation as a political figure.
Following this, there were rumours that Mahathir’s health was deteriorating and that he was in critical condition, prompting an aide to issue a statement and photos refuting it.
On March 12, Mahathir wished Muslims a Happy Ramadan in a statement on Facebook, where he also gave an update on his condition.
