Google deactivated features of currency convertor widget - minister

Google has temporarily deactivated several features of its currency conversion widget from ringgit to US$, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking during a press conference at Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur, the minister revealed that he reached out to the technology company for confirmation on the matter.

“Google informed me that based on their discussions with Bank Negara Malaysia, they have temporarily taken down several features to ensure that the incident which had happened twice, will not happen again,” he said.

He also said the features would be reinstated once the technical issues have been resolved.

Last week, the central bank in a statement pointed out that Google had published inaccurate US$-to-ringgit exchange rate data twice this year.

The statement was issued in response to Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan who posted a sarcastic remark on Facebook: “Among signs of a strengthening ringgit. What? #salam5ringgit”.

The post was accompanied by an image of a Google-generated exchange rate which inaccurately showed that US$1 was equal to RM4.98 when BNM said the actual rate was quoted at 4.7015 against the US dollar at 9am and 4.7045 at 5pm on March 15.

Attempting to access Wan Saiful’s Facebook post now shows this message: “Post not available in Malaysia. This is because we complied with a legal request from MCMC (Malaysia) to restrict this content”.

Commenting further, Fahmi thanked Google for efforts taken to ensure its data integrity.

“So this is what is happening. I don’t want any parties to make claims or slander as if we had instructed Google to remove certain features.

“That is not true,” he stressed.
