Govt saves RM23,000 monthly from Anwar foregoing salary - minister

The government has saved an average of RM22,826.65 a month due to Anwar Ibrahim's decision not to take a salary for his job as the prime minister since November 2022.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa, the amount is an estimation of the expenses allocated for the prime minister's basic pay.

Although Zaliha did not give the total amount, the estimated amount saved is more than RM300,000.

The minister said this in a written reply to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) who asked about the amount the government saved from Anwar's refusal to take his salary.

In his first press conference as prime minister on Nov 24, 2022, Anwar said he would not take a salary for his prime minister and finance minister positions, describing it as the first step to gaining the people's confidence in his leadership.

In January this year, he reiterated his position, saying he would not get paid for his positions as long as the country's economy had not fully recovered.

The same would apply to the salary cut for cabinet members, he added.

In June last year, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Duties) Armizan Mohd Ali told Parliament that the government saved an estimated RM100,000 a month from cabinet members' pay cut, which comes up to RM1.2 million in savings a year. - Mkini
