Govt won't interfere with Bersatu's constitution amendment

The government will not interfere with Bersatu’s application to the Registrar of Society (ROS) to amend its party constitution, said Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said this when asked about the status of the application and whether there had been any government interference.

“That’s because they had done political interference before (when they were in power), so they think this home minister will do the same.

“That’s a big mistake,” he told a press conference at his ministry’s headquarters in Putrajaya today.

However, Saifuddin (above) did not elaborate on the alleged interference or name those involved.

Bersatu had approved a motion to amend its constitution in a bid to stop its MPs and assemblypersons from supporting the party’s rivals.

At the extraordinary general meeting, party delegates unanimously agreed to amend Article 10 of the Bersatu constitution regarding the resignation and dismissal of party members.

The move was in response to six Bersatu MPs who had pledged support to Anwar Ibrahim’s premiership without leaving the party.

Apart from barring its elected representatives from defecting in the future, Bersatu also demanded that the six MPs vacate their seats immediately.

The six are Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjung Karang), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

Immediate enforcement

Previously, Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan had urged the ROS to approve the constitutional amendment to enable its immediate enforcement.

He also expressed hope that there would be no political interference that could influence or delay the process.

“There is no reason why the traitors’ six seats can’t be vacated. Don’t come up with any excuses to cover for them,” the Tasek Gelugor MP posted on Facebook on March 2.

Meanwhile, Bersatu information chief Razali Idris said the party is confident that the ROS would not frustrate the amendment process.

“When there is approval from more than two-thirds of delegates, there is no problem to approve it.

“I don’t think the ROS would cause problems for us because constitutional amendments are a normal affair,” he was quoted as saying on Wednesday. - Mkini
