Hulu Langat MP retracts 'bad behaviour like Orang Ulu' jibe

PARLIAMENT | Willie Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo) has called out Sany Hamzan (Harapan-Hulu Langat) for using the term “Orang Ulu” in a derogatory manner.

Willie stood up to raise a point of order against Sany who made the remark against Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut).

“What is wrong with Besut? Just sit down! I was asking Kulim Bandar-Baharu,” said Sany (above) who stood up and interjected Roslan Hashim’s (PN-Kulim Bandar-Baharu) debate of the royal address.

“Besut was a magistrate… but showing bad behaviour! Behaviour like Orang Ulu!” said Sany.

Roslan had urged the government to reinstate the civil servant’s pension scheme, while Sany argued that the idea had been debated since the administration of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Sany said no prime minister other than Anwar Ibrahim dared to abolish civil servants’ pensions, even after considering the financial burden of up to RM140 billion by the year 2040.

Willie then stood up and raised a point of order against Sany, asking the Amanah lawmaker to retract his “macam Orang Ulu” remark.

“Because Orang Ulu now has become the speaker (sic) of the Dewan Negara,” said Willie in reference to Dewan Negara president Mutang Tagal.

Sany retracted his remarks and apologised but initially claimed he was referring to people in Hulu Langat.

The term Orang Ulu represents over 20 small indigenous groups from Sarawak.

Dewan Negara president Mutang Tagal

Mutang, a former Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, was appointed to succeed Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar who was appointed as the eighth Sarawak governor on Jan 26.

Mutang, a Lun Bawang from Lawas, is also the first member of the Dayak community to be appointed Senate president. - Mkini
