India will hold its high-stakes parliamentary election in seven phases starting April 19, the Election Commission announced on Saturday.
Almost 969 million voters are eligible to participate in the massive electoral exercise in which 543 members of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, will be chosen.
The counting of votes will take place on June 4.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 73, is seeking a third term in office, with his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) facing a stiff challenge from an alliance led by the main opposition Indian National Congress.
The 17th Lok Sabha’s term is due to expire on June 16.
The Election Commission also announced assembly polls in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim.
Announcing the schedule, the election commission explained that the staggered polls, between April 19 and June 1, were needed due to the country’s geography and the huge logistics involved in conducting the vote.
