The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has questioned whether urban congestion in Kuala Lumpur and the Federal Territories is due to bias in development by the federal government.
Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said economic development in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya has created numerous job opportunities, leading to a significant migration of people from other states to the Federal Territories.
This, in turn, has put pressure on the government to develop more efficient public infrastructure to tackle road congestion and meet the demands of an increasingly dense urban population.
“The question, however, is (congestion in Kuala Lumpur) because these areas are directly governed by the federal government that a large portion of development funding is concentrated on these territories alone?” His Majesty asked at the Federal Territories investiture ceremony today.
As such, the monarch wants the government to allocate equal funding and focus on developing cities in all states.
Sultan Ibrahim said that this could help ease congestion in cities.
“If all states are developed together, the migration of people to city centres can be reduced, and congestion will be more manageable,” he said.
Besides urban congestion, the Agong also noted that cleanliness in Kuala Lumpur was not satisfactory.
“As someone who enjoys driving myself, I can clearly see the condition of the roads and their surroundings.
“What I see is that there are still several places in Kuala Lumpur where cleanliness is not up to the mark.
“The city's residents must also participate in maintaining cleanliness and the environment.
“My government is not a garbage collection government. To the enforcers, carry out your responsibilities honestly, sincerely and trustworthily,” the king added. - Mkini
