PARLIAMENT | A man has been detained over the alleged sale of dates from Israel, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Armizan Mohd Ali.
“In a raid, a local man in his 40s believed to be the owner of the relevant business was detained for further investigations,” he told the Dewan Rakyat this morning.
Armizan was referring to a Customs Department raid on March 12 at Northport in Klang, Selangor where 73 packs of organic jumbo medjool dates believed to be from Israel were confiscated.
The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967, he added.
Previously, the media reported the existence of dates from Israel in local markets ahead of Ramadan.
This raised questions on how such products were brought into Malaysia considering the lack of trade relationships between the country and Israel.
Armizan said his ministry will continue to monitor local markets for such products.
In response to questions from Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), he said his ministry does not have the jurisdiction to consider import licences as per the Customs (Prohibition Of Imports) Order 2023.
“As for YB’s (Rosol’s) concern… we will continue to monitor markets through the various acts under the ministry especially the Trade Descriptions Act 1972 to inspect dates offered to consumers.
“And we have immediately included in the standard operating procedures and reference terms for Ops Pantau, which we launched especially for this Ramadan and Aidilfitri, to monitor the alleged sale of these dates closely,” Armizan added. - Mkini
