Maritime Malaysia copter crashes into sea near Pulau Angsa

A helicopter belonging to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) crashed into the sea near Pulau Angsa, Kuala Selangor, this morning.

According to the agency’s director-general Hamid Mohd Amin, the Agusta Westland AW139 helicopter made an emergency landing in the water at about 9.55am while performing a rescue exercise.

“Early information was received from an angler who was at the scene.

“Search and rescue (SAR) operations were activated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at 10.15am this morning,” Hamid said in a statement today.

According to him, the helicopter was flown by Lieutenant Commander Tengku Mohd Nizam Tengku Zakaria, while Lieutenant Commander Mohamad Azrol bin Saidi, Warrant Officer 1 John Ibno, and rescue swimmer, petty officer Muhamad Nurhayyat Hashim were onboard.

There were no casualties involved and fisherfolk at the scene accorded first aid to the victims before SAR teams arrived.

Hamid said all four involved were rescued and flown to the Subang Maritime Air Station.

“MMEA will conduct a probe to identify the cause of the incident.

“The agency would also like to extend gratitude for the information and fast action by the maritime community in the mission. The SAR efforts were ended by CAAM at 11.15am.” - Mkini
