Preacher released from prison after serving time for sedition

Preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin has been released from prison, about six months after he started his nine-month jail term for sedition.

The former religious adviser to the Penang chief minister took to Facebook to announce his release today.

“Throughout my imprisonment, I finished reading more than 30 books.

“I wrote two books, two novels and a personal note,” said Wan Ji, adding that the topics he wrote include Islamic religious books, and a fictional romantic novel centred around war-torn Kashmir.

“I wrote all the books with my own hands, using pencils.

“Unfortunately, the Kashmir love story that I completed until 50 out of 72 chapters, was seized by the prison warden,” he wrote.

Wan Ji began serving his jail term in September last year over a 2014 sedition case linked to the Selangor sultan.

This was after the Court of Appeal unanimously allowed his appeal to reduce his sentence which the High Court had previously enhanced.

However, the bench did not allow his appeal to quash the conviction.

On April 9, 2018, the Shah Alam Sessions Court found Wan Ji guilty of sedition and imposed a nine-month jail sentence. Both the accused as well as the prosecution appealed over the sentencing.

On July 9, 2019, the Shah Alam High Court allowed the prosecutors’ appeal for a more severe sentence and increased Wan Ji’s custodial term to one year in jail. The accused then appealed to the Court of Appeal. - Mkini
