PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, will step down as chairman of the national council for Islamic affairs (MKI) this Saturday.

In a Facebook post, the Selangor Royal Office said Sultan Sharafuddin did not want to helm the MKI for another term, having led the council since March 10, 2022.

He will leave it to the Conference of Rulers to select the new chairman.

According to the MKI Regulations 2022, the council’s chairman is chosen by the Conference of Rulers and the Ruler serves a two-year term. Their term can be renewed.

Today, Sultan Sharafuddin granted an audience to Islamic development department director-general Hakimah Yusoff and the MKI secretariat.

During his last meeting as MKI chairman, the Selangor Ruler expressed his gratitude for the cooperation extended by the council’s members and secretariat throughout his tenure. - FMT
