Sock-gate: Preacher denies making post due to business rivalry

Independent preacher Firdaus Wong dismissed notions that he spread the issue involving socks bearing the word “Allah” to sabotage KK Mart over business rivalry.

In a post on TikTok, Firdaus (above) said that his business venture, Mykampung Freshmart has not been operating for some time as opposed to what certain parties have claimed.

"I apologise to Malaysians because I did not explain that Mykampung Freshmart had already ceased operations about two years ago.

“Many social media users have attempted to create a perception that the socks issue has an element of sabotage by me based on business competition," he said.

The controversy surfaced last week when images of the Miranosock socks being sold at the Bandar Sunway outlet of the KK Mart went viral on social media.

Following the uproar, KK Mart issued an apology to all its customers, particularly the Muslim community, and confirmed that immediate actions had been taken to halt the sale of the socks.

Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has been vocal about the issue, urging a boycott against KK Mart should the chain fail to display banners apologising for the incident.

Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Akmal has the party’s full support in handling the issue.

‘Never called for boycott’

Meanwhile, Firdaus said he never called the people to boycott KK Mart but made the post to urge the authorities to conduct a proper investigation.

“On this Friday, in the month of Ramadan, I would like to apologise to all Malaysians over the issue.

"Because in my post...I never touched on and never wrote that I was the first person to find the socks.

"In fact, in that same post, I did not write that we should boycott KK Mart," Firdaus added. - Mkini
