Socks with 'Allah': Umno Youth to lodge police report, KK Mart apologises

Umno Youth will be lodging a police report against the KK Super Mart chain of convenience stores over a recent controversy involving the sale of socks with the word Allah.

Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said others are also welcome to file a report.

“Do it (the mistake) first and then apologise, as simple as that.

“If Starbucks we can boycott until it closes, not to mention this supermarket.

“This respect is not just about apologising, but you need to know what other people’s values and sensitivities are. We will teach them a lesson,” he said in a Facebook post.

Last Wednesday, the operator of the convenience store chain, KK Super Mart & Superstore Sdn Bhd (KK Super Mart) apologised over a viral video of the sale of Miranosock branded socks with the word Allah.

The company said the product’s sale had been immediately terminated while it requested an explanation from the supplier.

Police said it received no report about the socks with the word “Allah” being sold at the KK Mart convenience store Bandar Sunway branch.

As such, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan when contacted said police have not opened an investigation paper regarding the issue.

‘Teach them a lesson’

Akmal said Umno Youth’s move to lodge a police report was based on confirmation that no report had been made regarding the matter.

“If police cannot investigate because there is no report, then Umno Youth throughout Malaysia will file a police report from today.

“Come on all Malaysians, let’s show these brazen people, that this country still has people who can teach them a lesson,” he added.

Earlier today, KK Mart founder and group executive chairperson KK Chai repeated his apology over the “unexpected” incident which had never happened in their 23 years of operations.

“I hope there will be no boycott of KK Mart and I’m ready to meet all parties to explain the matter, including the Umno Youth chief who issued a boycott call.

“We’re not running away and we take full responsibility in this case, aside from publicly apologising to the public and Muslims in particular,” he said.

Online portal Malaysia Gazette quoted Chai as saying he has always been aware of public sensitivities, and aside from issuing an immediate apology, KK Mart also lodged its own police report on March 14.

He also revealed that the offending product was placed directly on KK Mart’s shelves by its supplier at three out of 800 premises nationwide. - Mkini
