Umno man puzzled over govt's push for more Chinese to join civil service

Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin was puzzled over the government's campaign to encourage more Chinese to enter the civil workforce.

The New Straits Times quoted Shaiful as saying that improving the country's civil service should be the focus and such a campaign would likely sideline the bumiputera economy in the future.

"There is now government encouragement to increase the entry of the Chinese community to join the civil service due to their purported lack of interest in civil service.

"The civil service has been the platform for Malays to compete on a stage of fairness and equity. If this platform is also to be compromised and limited, the Malay economy will suffer," he said.

Quoting the Statistics Department (DOSM), Shaiful reportedly said that Malaysian Chinese are more attracted to the private sector due to the better wage rate despite identical qualifications and experience to other groups.

He added that the Chinese currently top the list for the highest monthly wage-median at RM4,000 compared to other groups - Indian at RM2,500, and bumiputera at RM2,000.

"The starting salary for Chinese workers is also higher compared to other ethnicities. Chinese individuals have the highest median postgraduate salary of nearly RM3,500 compared to others averaging RM2,000 to RM2,500," he was quoted as saying.

Further commenting on hiring policies, Shaiful reportedly raised concern over how non-Chinese are facing discrimination such as certain requirements set by employers such as proficiency in Mandarin.

"Other groups are burdened by 'requirements' such as mandating Mandarin proficiency, it only adds pressure on the bumiputera," he added.

Previously, the New Straits Times reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary Chan Ming Kai said the government is launching a campaign to boost Chinese-ethnic interest in joining the civil labour force. - Mkini
