The wife of Amri Che Mat lodged a police report last night to locate a witness who purportedly saw the activist’s abduction as part of an enforced disappearance nearly eight years ago.
Norhayati Mohd Ariffin told the Kuala Lumpur High Court today that she lodged the report at the Sentul police station in order to trace Saiful Afdzan Senei, a potential witness who could strengthen her related lawsuit against the police and government over her husband going missing on Nov 24, 2016.
Saiful was the owner of a restaurant in Perlis who allegedly witnessed Amri’s abduction. However, he did not turn up at the previous Suhakam inquiry into Amri’s case in 2018, leading to the police then seeking to have the witness charged in court over his failure to attend the inquiry.
During the hearing of the civil action before judge Su Tiang Joo, the plaintiff told her counsel Surendra Ananth that she lodged the report at the Sentul police station around 10.47pm last night.
Norhayati said a police officer known only as Sergeant Haidar then called her wanting to meet her at the police station around 11.15pm last night. She met him around 11.18pm.
Unable to locate
The plaintiff said after she shared her MyKad with Sergeant Haidar, the police officer contacted her again around 7.46am today to tell her that Saiful is listed as wanted in the police database.
“However, he (Sergeant Haidar) said he could not help locate (Saiful) as there is no further information about him,” Norhayati testified.Hearing before Su resumes on April 22.
Norhayati, in the civil action, seeks a court order for the police to wrap up the investigation into the whereabouts of Amri.
On April 3, 2019, Suhakam’s public inquiry concluded that Amri and pastor Raymond Koh, who vanished in 2016 and 2017 respectively, were victims of enforced disappearances.
The three-member panel unanimously concluded that the perpetrators were members of the Special Branch from police headquarters Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur.
Koh’s family also has an ongoing civil court action against the police and government over the pastor’s enforced disappearance. - Mkini
