Adam tells Akmal to self-reflect, not cloud inter-party relations in govt

PKR Youth leader Adam Adli Abdul Halim reminded his counterpart in Umno, Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, to be careful in issuing statements that could cloud relations between parties in the federal coalition government.

This is after Akmal questioned the statement of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is PKR president, regarding the judicial review application of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to serve the rest of his prison sentence under house arrest.

“Brother Akmal may want to calm down and look left and right a little when issuing statements, whether they are personal or official.

“You are referring to our president, our prime minister,” said Adam in a social media post today.

He reminded Akmal that he was still one of the youth leaders in the coalition government.

Earlier, Anwar said the affidavit filed by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on April 9 to support Najib’s efforts to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest was made in his capacity as Umno president.

“He (Zahid submitted the affidavit) in his capacity as the Umno president and the attorney-general represented the Pardons Board.

“We remain steadfast that all decisions involving the Malay rulers cannot be challenged. I do not wish to comment further as this has been our (the government’s) principle since independence,” said Anwar.

Anwar’s statement prompted Akmal to retort that the house arrest order was related to a royal decree and not a matter for the party president.

“This is not a matter of the president of the party or the government.

“This is a question of whether the government wants to uphold the order or otherwise. The people want an explanation, not an excuse,” said Akmal via his Facebook.

‘Be careful with your views’

Commenting on the matter, Adam said Akmal needs to show respect to the prime minister, just like how respect was shown to Zahid by other parties in the coalition government.

“We agreed to show respect to your president, by always carefully choosing words and expressing views even on issues that are sometimes very fundamental and impressive.

“What is the price for you to take the same attitude towards our president, our main leader, the prime minister himself?” he asked.

He added that as the youth leader in a governing party, Akmal has wide and full access to the leadership - including the prime minister - to voice his opinion.

“Whatever you want to say, it is impossible not to be heard, impossible not to be answered.

“Perhaps you have a high spirit to defend Najib; that’s your pledge that we never forbid even if there are different views.

“Trust me, creating an atmosphere that tends to start this kind of friction does not help in achieving what is best for everyone,” said Adam. - Mkini
