Bersatu information chief Razali Idris does not know the law, or the party constitution, for asking the seven representatives who pledged support for the prime minister to vacate their seats.
Thus, Razali needs to be replaced by someone “smarter”, said Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal.
“The Bersatu information chief does not know the law. I suggest Bersatu change its information chief to someone more intelligent,” Syed Abu Hussin (above) told Malaysiakini when contacted.
He was commenting on Razali’s claim that the membership of the seven Bersatu elected representatives who have pledged support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is no longer valid.
In saying so, the Bersatu supreme council member also urged the seven individuals to vacate their seats without being served an official letter of sacking, if they were “gentlemen” enough.
The Bersatu constitutional amendment was prompted by the defections of MPs Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnanin Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli) and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).
In early March, Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari voiced support for Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, citing the well-being of his constituents.
The amendment to Article 10 of Bersatu’s constitution stipulates that any elected representative who defected from the party would automatically cease to be a member of the party.
In doing so, the defectors will also trigger the anti-hopping law per Article 49A of the Federal Constitution, and their seats will be vacated.
‘Not coffee shop talk’
Syed Abu Hussin said matters on a party’s constitutional amendment have to undergo their due process.
“Once the amendments are passed, you carry on with your process, and we will do ours.
“It doesn’t work by challenging others’ masculinity or femininity. This is not coffee shop talk.
“This is one of the reasons Bersatu is in bad shape: its’ information chief does not know the law.
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin previously explained how the party planned to trigger the seats to be vacated.
According to him, upon receiving the green light from the Registrar of Societies, party secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin will send an official letter to each of the six MPs (then) asking them to state their position.
“Hamzah will write to them asking if they indeed support PMX (Anwar). If they say yes, then they will trigger (the constitutional provision and anti-hopping law), and thus, would have to vacate their seats.
