Camaraderie among grassroots machinery strong as ever - Tok Mat

Ahead of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan assured that cooperation among grassroots machinery of the government’s component parties is as strong as ever and will replicate previous successes.

Mohamad (above), also known as Tok Mat, was responding on how the camaraderie among top government leaders has not been translated into votes in the previous elections as the collaboration is not received well among grassroots members.

“I did not see that it (cooperation among grassroots machinery) was not being translated (into votes), it was translated very well.

“Even in Pulai, Simpang Jeram, I was practically there and was told that Simpang Jeram was a bit tricky because of the composition of the voters.

“A lot of people said ‘Pulai will be an easy win, but Simpang Jeram is quite difficult because of the voters’ composition’, of which the majority are Malays. But we pulled through,” he told reporters after hosting the Foreign Ministry Raya Celebration in Putrajaya today.

He also reiterated that BN will support any government candidate in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Mohamad also said there is no issue among grassroots machinery as he deemed that they are pivotal in delivering seats for the government.

Boycott movement within BN?

Commenting on purported cryptic moves from BN component parties, namely MIC and MCA, Mohamad outrightly denied any boycott movement from within the coalition for the impending by-election.

He said BN has yet to discuss how the party would approach the polls, adding that it would convene soon before the nomination day.

“BN has yet to discuss (on the by-election), let us meet first.

“We will then discuss and exchange opinions and think about the best way to ensure how BN will move as a team to help the candidate from the unity government to contest in Kuala Kubu Baharu,” he said.

In a separate event, Bernama today reported DAP vice-chairperson Nga Kor Ming as saying that his party had provided significant support for the BN candidate in the Pelangai by-election last year.

Nga reportedly claimed that DAP successfully obtained 98 percent of Chinese votes.

“Umno has never before received 98 percent of the Chinese votes. This success is a testament to the spirit of unity and is something to be proud of,” he was quoted as saying of the by-election which BN won.

Nga also thanked BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi after the latter pledged that his coalition would back any candidate fielded by the coalition government component parties for the impending Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Yesterday, it was reported that BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi disclosed his intentions to persuade MCA to provide support during the impending Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign.

This move came after Zahid met with MCA president Wee Ka Siong, who had earlier stated that the party would not actively campaign for a Pakatan Harapan candidate contesting the seat.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim refuted reports that MIC will not be campaigning in Kuala Kubu Baharu if the chosen candidate is not from BN.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Anwar said MIC’s announcement contradicted his phone conversation with MIC president SA Vigneswaran. - Mkini
