PETALING JAYA: The family of the late inspector-general of police Hanif Omar has refuted a media report that they requested for his final resting place to be changed.
Hanif, 85, died at 2.15am on Saturday due to kidney disease.
In a statement today, Hanif’s son Abdul Rahmat Omar said a Malaysia Gazette story on Saturday which stated that the change in Hanif’s burial spot from the Heroes Mausoleum at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur to the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery in Damansara was made upon the family’s request.
“No discussions were held by the (police’s) protocol unit with the family, especially with me as the heir and family representative,” said Rahmat.
“There are also parties beginning to make unhealthy political assumptions (on this matter).”
Rahmat said he first announced his father’s death at 3.16am on Saturday.
He released another statement at 6.22am saying his father’s body would be placed at home until 10am to allow relatives and friends to pay their last respects, after which the body would be taken to the Al-Ikhlas Mosque in Section 13, Shah Alam, to be bathed, shrouded and for prayers.
Rahmat said no decision on the burial venue could be made until the family received feedback from the police’s secretariat and welfare department.
He said he issued a third statement at 8.40am to inform the public that Hanif’s body would be taken to the Bukit Aman police mosque for final respects and prayers before being taken to Bukit Kiara.
“At around 9.45am, I was told by the police to consider taking the body directly to the National Mosque for all arrangements until burial at the Heroes Mausoleum,” said Rahmat.
“After discussing it with my mother, we agreed. This was the final information and communication regarding the management of my father’s burial until the National Mosque’s imam announced that the burial would be at Bukit Kiara.”
Among those who expressed their condolences to Hanif’s family included the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin also expressed their condolences to Hanif’s family.
Hanif became the country’s fourth IGP at the age of 35 on June 8, 1974 and retired on Jan 15, 1994, becoming the longest-serving IGP in Malaysia.
After retiring in January 1994, Hanif served as a member of the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operations and Management of the Police (2004-2005), patron of Yayasan Pengaman Malaysia, and president of the Malaysian branch of the Royal Asiatic Society.
He was also actively involved in the corporate world, holding several key positions such as chairman of Maxis Communications Bhd and deputy chairman of Genting Bhd and Resorts World Bhd. - FMT
