A McDonald’s billboard in Sungai Petani, Kedah, has become the latest vandalism target by proponents of a boycott campaign against Israel-linked entities.
The signboard - announcing an upcoming McDonald’s drive-thru facility at the district - was found spray-painted with the words “Boikot Pembunuh” and “Darah Palestin di tangan kamu”.
Police had since received a report and opened an investigation under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.
According to Kuala Muda police chief Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail, a report was lodged on April 22 by a representative of a housing developer who owns the land area where the billboard was erected.
“For your information, the incident was first noticed on April 19 and the company had dismantled the billboard before lodging a police report.
“Police have recorded statements from three individuals. There has been no arrest made so far, and we urge anyone who has information on the incident to contact the nearest police station or come to Kuala Muda district police headquarters to assist our investigation,” he said.
A photo of the vandalised billboard had gone viral after it was posted on a Facebook page called “Kedah Version” on April 20.
Last week, two unrelated premises operated by McDonald’s and Starbucks in Tawau, Sabah were reportedly subjected to similar vandalism.
A week earlier, a family who went to dine at a McDonald’s outlet in Sungai Isap, Kuantan, Pahang was provoked and threatened by a group of men who were campaigning to boycott the company.
Police have since arrested several individuals in connection to the incidents in Tawau and Kuantan.
