MCMC warns against exploiting footwear controversy

 


The country’s internet regulator issued a stern warning this morning against any exploitation of the controversy surrounding a design element found on the sole of a footwear brand, which allegedly resembled the word “Allah”.

In a statement, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it will not hesitate to take action under the MCMC Act against anyone who violates the law.

Those who find such infractions online, such as on social media platforms, should report it to authorities, including the police, the commission said in a statement.

“MCMC will not hesitate to take action under the MCMC Act 1998 if any party is found trying to exploit this issue or making comments that can spark racial tension.

“Everyone should give the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and the authorities room to investigate this allegation.

“The public is reminded not to upload, share, or distribute social media contents that touch on the sensitivity of the 3R (race, religion, and royalty) and instead report them to the police and MCMC via https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my,” read the statement.

The latest controversy started when a photo of a shoe by local fashion brand Vern’s went viral on social media for allegedly sporting a design that resembled the word “Allah” on its sole.

The allegations appeared to have first surfaced on TikTok on March 23. However, it caught wider attention on social media yesterday after a couple posted about it on Facebook.

Vern’s has since issued a statement to clarify that the graphic on the soles of some of their footwear that has caused controversy is a stylised heel. - Mkini
