IPOH: More than 16,000 cases of speeding have been detected since April 1 by an automated safety system of the road transport department (JPJ) during special operations ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays.

JPJ senior enforcement director Lokman Jamaan said 95% of offenders were driving between 130km/h and 170km/h, and the rest were driving at speeds exceeding 170km/h.

He urged drivers to take more responsibility for their own safety and that of other road users by observing the prescribed speed limits. “This can reduce daily accident rates and fatalities during the festive season,” he told reporters here.

Lokman said JPJ issued 26,313 notices to road users for failing to comply with the road safety regulations and laws during a nationwide special operation on motorcycle users last week. He said 1,464 motorcycles were seized during the operation.

In Penang, JPJ officers issued 197 summons and notices to motorcyclists for various offences at the Sungai Dua toll plaza and North-South Expressway this morning.

The operation was aimed at preventing “Mat Rempit” activities such as illegal racing and motorcycle speed testing activities which normally take place in the early hours of the morning.

Among the offences identified were riding without licence, road tax, insurance or brakes; failing to display registration plates; illegally modifying exhaust pipes; and not using the motorcycle lane on the highway. - FMT
