Ahead of nomination day for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election this weekend, Muda and PSM are scheduled to meet and discuss whether either party will field its candidate against Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional.
When contacted, PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan said a meeting between leaders of the two parties will be held tonight.
“Yes, we are in discussion with Muda. We are having a meeting tonight.
“The discussion will be on whether we (PSM and Muda) want to field a candidate or not,” he told Malaysiakini.
Separately, Muda central executive committee member Leben Siddarth said the party will be represented by its acting president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz, among others.
“We will be issuing a joint statement (with PSM) soon to announce our decision on whether to contest or otherwise.
“Should a decision be made to contest, the candidate will either be from Muda or PSM, and not from both parties,” he added.
Malaysiakini understands that Muda has identified a potential candidate, subject to the decision to be made by both parties.
‘Serious commitment’
PSM has also called for a press conference tomorrow to highlight unresolved housing issues in Kuala Kubu Baharu, affecting plantation workers.
“Workers from five plantations are asking for a serious commitment from all candidates and parties contesting the by-election,” said PSM media coordinator Sivaranjani Manickam in a media alert for the press conference.
Muda and PSM formed an alliance following the six-state election last year, after Muda exited its initial pact with Harapan.
The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat fell vacant following the death of its DAP incumbent Lee Kee Hiong on March 21.
Polling is slated to take place on May 11, while nomination day falls on April 27 and advance polling is on May 7. - Mkini
