The cabinet has not discussed the call by former Court of Appeal judge Hishamudin Yunus for the government to publicly apologise to the victims of Ops Lalang, 37 years ago.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he also does not have further information regarding the call.
"This matter has not been discussed in the cabinet meeting, maybe tomorrow I will have information. But so far, the cabinet has not discussed it," said Fahmi at a press conference after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Social Security Organization (Socso) and the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) in Kuala Lumpur today.
Fahmi, who is also the government spokesperson, said this in response to the call for the government to publicly apologise to victims of Ops Lalang which took place in 1987.
However, Fahmi did not answer whether he wanted to bring it up at tomorrow's cabinet meeting.
"It is up to the prime minister if that is a matter he wants to discuss," he said briefly.
Open apology
On April 17, Hishamudin urged the government to make an open apology for Ops Lalang.
He said this was because the operation would not have happened if the Federal Constitution was respected.
The operation took place in 1987 when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was serving as prime minister.
A total of 106 activists, journalists and opposition politicians at the time were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA).
Since then, several detainees have come forward and said they were beaten and subjected to mental torture. - Mkini
