Sacked MIC leader won’t appeal dismissal

PETALING JAYA: A Selangor MIC leader who was sacked from the party yesterday said he will not appeal his dismissal, calling it “a waste of time”.

Awtar Singh was given his marching orders after releasing a video clip on social media in which he criticised party president SA Vigneswaran.

The dismissal letter that was issued just hours after his video was released, stated that he had 14 days to appeal against the sacking.

However, Awtar said any appeal hearing would be akin to appearing in a “kangaroo court”.

“Why should I appeal when I already know what the outcome will be,” he told FMT.

“They sent me the expulsion letter six hours after I released the video clip in which I questioned the president for saying there is no one strong enough in the party to take on his deputy M Saravanan.

“What kind of a democratic party is this when we cannot even criticise the president when we feel he has not made a fair statement. They can keep the party to themselves.”

Awtar was sacked with immediate effect for allegedly breaching the party’s constitution. In the dismissal letter, Vigneswaran said Awtar had “tarnished the party’s image and brought it into disrepute”.

In the now viral video, Awtar questioned the move by Vigneswaran to discourage anyone from challenging M Saravanan for the deputy president’s post in the party elections next month.

He called the president’s claim that there was no “hero” in the party who could match Saravanan an insult and challenged the party leaders to hold an open election.

On a related matter, Awtar claimed that his sacking was unjust as he was not issued any show-cause letter prior to his dismissal.

He went on to say he was let down by the treatment he received from a party he had served, in various capacities, for 40 years. Awtar was Puchong MIC division chief at the time of his dismissal.

“I gave two-thirds of my life to MIC and this is how they treat members. It was not worth it.”  - FMT
