KUALA LUMPUR: The statement made by Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz over his resignation as the Selangor Umno treasurer showed his lack of awareness of the state chapter's political movement after its dismal performance during the 15th general election (GE15)
Selangor Umno information chief Datuk Dr Mohd Zaidi Md Zain said the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister should instead refrain from issuing statements that could 'embarrass' himself and confuse many quarters, including party members.
"As a party leader, it would be better for him to directly participate in efforts to strengthen the party alongside the state and central leadership, rather than just enjoying the result of the painful struggle that Umno members went through for the party despite not having high positions in the party or the government," he said when contacted by the New Straits Times.
Mohd Zaidi also did not agree with the statement made by Tengku Zafrul, who reduced Selangor Umno's efforts to rejuvenate the party following its performance in the state election last year as 'half-hearted'
Selangor Umno, said Mohd Zaidi, is in the process of carrying out a comprehensive post-mortem while formulating new strategies after its dismal performance in the previous elections, despite fielding prominent figures such as Tengku Zafrul and former Rembau member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin.
He also claimed that the statement made by Tengku Zafrul seemed to have an ulterior motive to create negative perceptions towards Selangor Umno.
He added that Tengku Zafrul also seemed to be isolated and estranged from the political movement of Selangor Umno.
He said the former treasurer was also absent during the state chapter's routine meeting held on Saturday night (April 7) despite being scheduled prior to his resignation.
"Tengku Zafrul should be present as the head of the Kota Raja division despite his resignation (as the treasurer) as one of the additional agendas in the meeting is to confirm his resignation as the Selangor Umno treasurer as well as the state's chapter stand on the matter.
"The meeting also saw all division chiefs and deputy chiefs, including Kota Raja, who represents Tengku Zafrul, supporting the leadership of Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.
"Many also expressed their regret over Tengku Zafrul's unfounded accusations that are far from actual facts," he said.
Mohd Zaidi also claimed that Tengku Zafrul's political secretary, Datuk Zainuri Mohd Zainal, who is also Umno Klang division chief, was not directly informed about the statement on his resignation as the Selangor Umno treasurer.
On Monday (April 1), Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as Selangor Umno treasurer, citing differences with the state chapter's leadership.
He added that when he was elected as a member of the Supreme Council and appointed as treasurer of Selangor Umno over a year ago, he aimed to bring a resurgence of the party in the state.
Alluding to the party's decline since the last state election, Tengku Zafrul said it was time for changes to take place swiftly.
Tengku Zafrul, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, said the party's severe defeat should serve as a "final warning" as it only won two out of the 12 seats it contested. - NST
