PETALING JAYA: Badminton ace Lee Zii Jia will know tomorrow if he will be included in the national squad for the 2024 Thomas Cup finals in Chengdu, China.
Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the coaches are expected to announce the full line-up for the tournament tomorrow, a day before the registration of players closes, Bernama reported.
It was previously reported that Zii Jia’s camp, Team LZJ, was still discussing with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) regarding his inclusion in the squad.
Malaysia will rest their hopes on 2023 Kuala Lumpur Masters champion Leong Jun Hao and youngsters Justin Hoh and Eogene Ewe, if Zii Jia and Ng Tze Yong – who is still recovering from back surgery – are left out of the squad.
Last week, national men’s singles coach Tey Seu Bock said the coaching panel was mulling roping in another professional player, Cheam June Wei, to join the national squad for the campaign.
Seu Bock said June Wei has started training at ABM in Bukit Kiara here from April 5 and will be evaluated by the coaching panel before the final selection for the Thomas Cup finals to be held from April 27 to May 5.
Malaysia, seeded fifth in the Thomas Cup, are drawn in Group D with European champions and 2016 edition winners Denmark, Hong Kong and Algeria.
Zii Jia quit BAM in January 2022 to become a professional player. - FMT
