All Bersatu reps ordered to 'affirm loyalty', says Hamzah

Elected representatives from Bersatu are duty-bound to remain loyal to the party, Hamzah Zainudin said.

The Bersatu secretary-general said it is one of the written instructions issued to party representatives.

“Especially for the six (MPs) who announced their support for the other side, they were given additional instructions.

“The media can meet with them to ask what special orders I have given them as the secretary-general after I received instructions from the supreme council,” he told a press conference at the Perikatan Nasional headquarters in Publika, Kuala Lumpur this evening.

The six MPs are Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) and Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang).

Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari also announced his support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

On April 5, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said his party would take action against the seven representatives after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“It’s the fasting month, it’s okay, they can celebrate first. After that, we will take appropriate measures according to the constitutional amendment,” he said.

Respond within 14 days

Hamzah said party members have to respond by carrying out the instructions and sending the letter back within 14 days from the date the instructions were given, which was on May 17.

This means that the deadline for the Bersatu representatives falls on May 31.

The letters were sent via email, post and by hand, he said.

“As an authoritative political party and to ensure that party affairs are managed with integrity and without corruption, the specific instructions below have been decided by the supreme council and issued in accordance with Clause 10(5) of the Bersatu constitution,” he said.

The instructions were to obey the party’s leadership and to announce that they did not support the coalition government of the day in any way.

Hamzah praised party chief whip Radzi Jidin, who was also present, saying that the latter had already followed the instructions given.

Earlier today, Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the party is set to file a notice to the Dewan Rakyat seeking to vacate the seats of six of its MPs who chose to back Anwar.

In April, the Registrar of Societies approved an amendment to the Bersatu constitution, enabling the party to act against the six members. Under the newly amended constitution, these lawmakers must immediately vacate their seats.

The amendment to Article 10 of Bersatu’s constitution stipulates matters of resignation and dismissal of party members.

Under the approved amendment, any Bersatu elected representative who defected from the party would automatically cease to be a member of the party.

In doing so, the defectors will also trigger the anti-hopping law per Article 49A of the Federal Constitution and their seats will be vacated. - Mkini
