Anwar embracing Hamas leader just 'for show' - activist

A political activist has accused Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of putting up a front in meeting a Hamas delegation to drive the attention away from the planned acquisition of Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAHB) by a consortium with purported Zionist links.

Hishamuddin Rais, a former close ally of Anwar, claimed that the act of “greeting and embracing” Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was just “a show” to cover up the issue concerning the deal made with Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), which pro-Israel company BlackRock wholly owns.

“BlackRock is clearly a Zionist (supporter) and we are giving our investment (MAHB) to the Zionists. Anwar cannot claim not to know (BlackRock’s background).

“He cannot also say he has met and hugged Ismail (Haniyeh). These are all theatrics, a show. They are staged to cover up (the deal) with BlackRock. That’s why the deal must be cancelled,” Hishamuddin (above) told a press conference outside the Transport Ministry in Putrajaya today.

He was part of the Palestine Solidarity Secretariat (SSP) group, comprising about 30 activists and politicians who demonstrated against the planned acquisition of MAHB outside the ministry.

On May 17, Anwar dismissed reports saying that 25 percent of MAHB shares would be acquired by a pro-Zionist foreign company.

Calling the claims baseless, he accused the opposition of trying to incite the public against the government by making the allegation.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke had also asserted that the claim was unfounded.

Earlier the same week, Anwar met a Hamas delegation, led by Ismail, during his three-day official visit to Qatar.

‘Walk the talk’

Pejuang information chief Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali urged the government and the rakyat to state their stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“The rakyat must urge the government to ‘walk the talk’. If the rakyat is serious about boycotting in support of the Palestinians’ sufferings, then by right, they should also boycott the government due to the BlackRock issue.

“We don’t need a hypocritical government and want the government to fulfil its promises made thus far,” he said.

Rafique claimed that BlackRock was a supplier, supporter, and cheerleader of the Palestinian genocide.

The transport minister’s secretary Rosli Muhammad accepted the memorandum.

In the memorandum, SSP urged the government to thoroughly and professionally answer all questions arising on the MAHB acquisition to the public.

The group asked for the acquisition process to be stopped, as a sign of the government’s support for Palestine. - Mkini
