Loke: Govt yet to discuss establishing May 13 RCI

The government has yet to discuss any proposal to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the May 13 tragedy, said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

However, he did not reveal his stand on the issue, a call previously backed by his party.

"That has not been discussed yet," said Loke, who is also the transport minister, briefly at a press conference after a working visit to Wisma Monorail in Kuala Lumpur today.

On May 18, Malaysiakini reported that a group that united the families of the victims of the May 13 tragedy repeated the call for the RCI to be established to investigate the race riots that killed hundreds of people in 1969.

Association of Friends of Warisan Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (Pesawa) said the country needs to hold an open discussion regarding the incident so the people can forget the bloody event.

"It is necessary, it must be necessary. This RCI can gather many academics to come together and discuss. Not just anyone can come and discuss this," said Pesawa chairperson Tan Choon Cheng.

For the record, DAP was one of the parties that called for an RCI to investigate the tragedy that continue to haunt the country even after decades.

In making the call, DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang reportedly said that the RCI was not intended to punish any individuals but to move forward and break down the racial wall in the country. - Mkini
