Azalina to PAS: Why call DAP ‘extremist’ now, after being allies?

Azalina Othman Said said PAS and its president Abdul Hadi Awang ‘should not be so inconsistent’ in its views of its former ally.

HULU SELANGOR: An Umno leader has ticked off PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for badmouthing DAP, reminding him that they were once allies.

Azalina Othman Said, Umno’s information chief, questioned why Hadi held a different view of DAP now, and had even labelled it an extremist group.

“There was no problem working with DAP before, but now it is. In the past they (PAS) adored DAP, now its different. They should not be inconsistent,” she told reporters while campaigning at the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election here.

PAS and DAP were previously allies under the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat, the then opposition coalition. Pakatan Rakyat, which was formed in 2008, was dissolved in 2015.

Azalina also urged Hadi to refrain from playing up sensitive 3R issues (race, religion and royalty) to intimidate voters.

Hadi’s depiction of DAP as “an extremist group” came in a speech at a Perikatan Nasional ceramah in Batang Kali last night.

Hadi called on Umno supporters in Selangor to avoid a situation similar to Singapore, where the Malays had little political power. He characterised DAP as an “extremist” group aiming to covertly seize power and potentially causing unrest across the country. - FMT
