Don't let DAP become MCA 2.0, Sheikh Umar says

DAP central executive committee member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali has called on his party to move firmly beyond focusing solely on one race, warning against copying MCA’s race-exclusive approach.

In a statement today, Sheikh Umar (above) emphasised the importance of DAP’s role in the coalition government, defending all Malaysians regardless of their racial or religious backgrounds.

“DAP must extend its support beyond race and religion. DAP is not MCA 2.0,” he pointed out.

Citing the example of Jementah assemblyperson Ng Kor Sim, who opted for DAP over MCA due to its inclusive approach, Sheikh Umar highlighted the party’s ethos of fighting for all Malaysians.

He shared that Ng declined her father’s suggestion to join MCA, affirming his belief in DAP fighting for all, regardless of ethnicity.

Sheikh Umar also pointed to MCA’s statement criticising his party and subsequent refusal to assist DAP during the recent Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Before the by-election, MCA president Wee Ka Siong had questioned why his party needed to support DAP in the by-election as the latter had a long record of insulting MCA.

Wee also shared a TikTok video of DAP’s secretary-general Anthony Loke saying he doesn’t like MCA and called the party a “taukeh party”.

On April 19, MCA also stated it wouldn’t campaign for Pakatan Harapan candidates in the by-election.

Despite no support from MCA, Harapan’s candidate from DAP Pang Sock Tao emerged victorious in Kuala Kubu Baharu with a significant majority of 3,869 votes.

Pang defeated Perikatan Nasional’s Khairul Azhari Saut, Parti Rakyat Malaysia candidate Hafizah Zainudin, and independent Nyau Ke Xin.
