Find terror attack mastermind, PM urges cops

Following a deadly attack on a police station in Johor, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged the authorities to find the masterminds and bring them to justice.

Taking to Facebook, he also expressed his grief over the incident and prayed for the injured police officer Mohd Hasif Roslan’s speedy recovery.

“This incident is truly heartbreaking and has shocked the nation, and I extend my condolences to the families of the deceased.

“And based on preliminary information received, I urge the police to find the mastermind and throw the book at them,” he said.

Earlier today, two police officers were killed and another was injured in an attack on the Ulu Tiram police station.

State police chief M Kumar confirmed the incident, saying it occurred at 2.45am and involved a masked intruder armed with pistols and a machete.

The police officers killed in the incident were Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar and Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad Said.

The suspect was reported to have been shot dead at the scene.

Following the incident, the police seized a Walther P99 pistol and a HK MP5 rifle from the suspect.

Later, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the suspect was identified as having links to Jemaah Islamiyah.

Police suspected the 22-year-old man had pre-planned and launched the attack to get his hands on firearms kept at the station, but police have yet to fully ascertain his agenda.

The authorities also arrested two students - one male aged 22 and one female aged 21 - who visited the station not long before the attack, which occurred at 2.45am.

When met in Astana, Kazakhstan earlier, Anwar told reporters that he wanted firm action to be taken against anyone attempting to create chaos in Malaysia.

“We do not compromise on matters of peace; the government will be firm. The lives of the people are our priority, and progress means nothing if peace is not maintained.

“Strong measures will be taken to stop this madness, and I fully support the steps taken by the police.

“I ask the public to cooperate, always be vigilant, and not give this evil group any opportunities,” Bernama reported him saying in a media conference at the end of his two-day official visit to Kazakhstan today. - Mkini
