Footballer attacks: Cops yet to establish motive, link behind incidents

Police have yet to draw a link between the recent attack incidents against national footballers, said Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, he said police need to establish the motives behind the incidents before they could ascertain if they were related.

“Motive... (our investigation) has yet to reach the motive part,” said Razarudin.

“If we can to get what the motives were, then perhaps we can say if the incidents were planned...,” he added later when asked about a possible connection between two of the incidents.

On May 2, two robbers attacked Terengganu FC winger Akhyar Rashid after he returned home from training.

Three days later, Selangor FC winger Faisal Halim suffered an acid attack at a mall, sustaining fourth-degree burns requiring split skin grafting surgery, a procedure where the skin is taken from various parts of the body and grafted onto the wounded areas.

It is expected to take three to six months before he can return to action.

In another incident on May 7, the rear windscreen of Johor Darul Ta’zim midfielder Safiq Rahim’s car was smashed while returning home after training.

Yesterday, Selangor FC defender Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee’s residence was broken into, and the burglars made away with a motorcycle, four branded sling bags and a passport.

Police have classified the case as a burglary, which is not related to recent assault incidents against other footballers. - Mkini
