IPOH: The High Court here today set July 29 for its decision on whether to change the open verdict ruling into the death of former naval cadet officer J Soosaimanicckam.

Judge Abdul Wahab Mohamed set the date after lawyer Zaid Malek challenged the open verdict delivered by the Ipoh coroner’s court last June.

Zaid wants to get the open verdict changed to death caused by other individuals or parties.

In his submission, he noted that Soosaimanicckam’s death was said to be due to pulmonary edema resulting from leptospirosis.

He said Soosaimanicckam failed to be provided early treatment, which caused a deterioration in his condition.

Coroner Ainul Shahrin Mohamad had determined that the cause of Soosaimanicckam’s death, which occurred during cadet training at the KD Sultan Idris naval base, was pulmonary oedema.

Ainul said Soosaimanicckam had passed out and was rushed to the Armed Forces Hospital in Lumut, where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased’s father, S Joseph, 71, and brother Charles Joseph, 38, were in court for today’s proceedings. - FMT
