Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has distanced himself from calls for the government to act against US defence companies accused of supporting the genocide in Gaza.
“Let the organisers respond,” Saifuddin told reporters when asked about protests against companies participating in an ongoing national security exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.
Among the protests included former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad saying inaction by the government will downplay Malaysia’s efforts to oppose atrocities by the Zionist regime.
“And the action should not be limited to just the two companies.
“If there are others, they too must be ordered to leave Malaysia,” said Mahathir in a statement.
The 18th Defence Services Asia (DSA) and 3rd National Security (Natsec) Asia 2024 event was organised by DSA Exhibition and Conference Sdn Bhd, supported by the Defence Ministry and Home Ministry.
The annual gathering of regional defence and security experts was launched by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today.
Earlier today, Bersatu international bureau chief Saifuddin Abdullah called on Putrajaya to prohibit two companies involved in supplying weapons to the Israeli military from participating in and sponsoring Natsec Asia 2024.
Specifically, the Indera Mahkota MP cited the inclusion of Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems - the former manufactures the F-35 fighter jet while BAE supplies equipment used by Israelis in attacks on Palestinians, resulting in casualties, including women and children.
US govt doesn’t decide on companies
Meanwhile, US ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D Kagan noted there had been no formal communication from parties that objected to the companies’ participation.
The envoy also said the US government has no role in deciding the participation of companies listed as vendors.
“The DSA has a global reputation. It is known as a serious show that puts together critical global players.
“As far as the participation and who comes here, the US government doesn’t have a role in it.
“This is something at the invitation of Malaysia. So I refer you to organisers of the show for questions on participation,” he said.
Anwar, Saifuddin Nasution, Defence Minister Khaled Nordin, and other government officials also spent over an hour at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, viewing the latest in defence and security technologies.
