News wire Reuters and the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur have denied a report claiming that four Malaysian-based companies were subjected to new sanctions over alleged support for financing terror activities.
The report circulated on social media last night following formal discussions between US State Department officials and several Malaysian ministers. It was made to look like it was published by Reuters.
“Any claims that Reuters reported that Malaysia is the first country in Southeast Asia to be listed by the United States as a state sponsor of terror are false.
“Reuters did not report this,” said the news agency on X.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur also issued a fake news alert.
“The United States has neither imposed any new sanctions on Malaysian companies nor listed Malaysia as a state sponsor of terror.
“The hoax below circulating on WhatsApp and other social media is fake news,” said the embassy on X.
Responding to the alerts, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil noted the denials and confirmed no such sanctions had been imposed, or that Malaysia was the first country in Southeast Asia to be listed by the US as a state sponsor of terror. - Mkini
