Ulu Tiram attacker buried separately after Fatwa committee decision

The suspect involved in last Friday’s attack on the Ulu Tiram police station has been buried well away from other graves at a cemetery, following instructions from the Johor fatwa committee.

According to Harian Metro, a special committee meeting chaired by Johor mufti Yahya Ahmad made the decision after discussing the deaths of the police personnel and how to handle the burial of the 21-year-old suspect who was shot dead.

“The fatwa on the suspect’s remains is a mark of hatred towards what the suspect had done, especially murdering personnel who were safeguarding the country’s security and did no wrong towards the suspect.

“The Fatwa Committee reminds the public not to be involved or have sympathy for the suspect over what he had done,” the committee was quoted as saying.

It was reported that the committee opined distancing the suspect’s grave served as a warning to society not to be involved in or commit similar acts.

The suspect’s remains were also not allowed at any mosque or surau, and could only be bathed, shrouded, and have prayers performed at the hospital or his family home.

As for the two police personnel killed in the attack, Bernama quoted Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairperson Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid as saying that they have been classified as martyrs who died Fi Sabilillah (in the cause of Allah).

“The Johor State Fatwa Committee has decided that both of them are classified as martyrs of the afterlife.

“Their funeral arrangements were completed with the four obligatory rituals namely bathing, shrouding, funeral prayers and burying the deceased,” he reportedly said in a statement.

In the pre-dawn attack last Friday, two police personnel and the suspect, were killed while another police member was critically injured.

The deceased personnel were Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24.

Mohd Hasif Roslan, who was critically hurt, is now stable and still receiving treatment at Sultan Ismail Hospital.

The suspect was reported to have been buried at 12.30pm today at the Kampung Sungai Tiram Muslim cemetery, with only a few village residents present besides police personnel tightly controlling the area. - Mkini
