Use your right of reply in the media, Fahmi reminds politicians

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has reminded all politicians, including himself, to be courteous in their actions and view journalists as performing an important role.

Responding to alleged threats made against several Tamil-language online portal journalists by a politician, Fahmi said he had requested more information regarding the reported incident, towards finding an amicable solution for parties involved.

“A reminder for myself and fellow politicians, we must always mind our manners, and we must view journalists as playing an important role,” said Fahmi in Astana, Kuching after a courtesy call to Sarawak governor Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

“Even though we may disagree with the reported views, but in general there will be what is known as a right of reply.

“So use that space to state your views. Don’t take matters into your own hands,” he stressed.

Commenting further on the alleged threat against Tamil portal journalists, Fahmi indicated readiness to meet with both aggrieved parties.

“I don’t agree and I condemn any action to threaten journalists’ safety,” he stressed.

On Wednesday, Malaysia Gazette reported that the Malaysian Indian Journalists Association (Mija) has requested a meeting with Fahmi regarding alleged threats and slander against three Tamil online portal journalists.

Mija president Gunalan Maniam said a female politician had also issued three Tamil online portals with notice of demands threatening a legal suit.

The National Union of Journalists Peninsular Malaysia in response had called on Fahmi to take immediate actions and stop such attacks. - Mkini
