KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s condition has improved since his admission to the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday, according to physicians treating the former prime minister.

Dr Mahathir was brought here yesterday after suffering from fever and cough, and was promptly admitted with suspected chest infection before being put on a course of antiviral medicines.

“He will continue to receive intravenous antibiotic treatment and intensive chest physiotherapy and is expected to continue to remain in IJN for the next few days,” said Sufi Yusoff, special officer to the former premier, in a statement today.

Doctors have also maintained their instructions to Dr Mahathir not to receive visitors for the duration of his stay. He is expected to be discharged later this week.

The 85-year-old former prime minister has a history of heart complications and underwent two heart operations — once in 1989 and another in 2007.

The second, a heart bypass operation, was also conducted by surgeons at IJN.

In October of last year, Dr Mahathir was hospitalised during a trip to Melbourne, Australia, where he was admitted to Epworth Hospital there for three days after suffering from flu and cough.
