Police report against MCA chief for belittling Islam

PAS youth leader says there have been many instances where Soi Lek insulted Islam.

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS today filed a police report against MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek for insulting Islam.

A leader from the party’s youth wing, Kamaruzaman Mohamad, said Chua had belittled Islam several times in recent statements.

He said Section 298 of the Penal Code stated that anyone who deliberately insulted the religious feelings of any person shall be punished with imprisonment for up to one year or fined.

“He is purposely trying to antagonise the Muslims,” he said after lodging a report at the Dang Wangi police station this morning.

He added that Chua had criticised Tenang by-election’s PAS candidate, Normala Sudirman, by calling her an “extremist” for not shaking hands with men.

Kamaruzaman said Chua had said; “If you can accept this kind of Islamic value, go ahead and vote for PAS.”

Chua was also accused of saying that PAS was attempting to make the country into a theocratic Islamic state, and for this reason should not be allowed to join Barisan Nasional.

The MCA president was also alleged to have said that some of the most corrupted countries in the world were Muslim-majority nations and that these countries lacked democracy because of their emphasis on religion.

“Do not be too optimistic that once PAS rules the government, Malaysia will be free from corruption,” Chua is alleged to have said.

Kamaruzaman said Chua’s insensitivity and malicious remarks were intentional, and an attempt to keep Malaysians under the Barisan Nasional umbrella.

“He is very racist. He is trying to make it so that whenever Islam is threatened, people will favour Umno. He practices race-based politics.” Kamaruzaman said.

Chua, when met by reporters at another function, said the police were free to investigate the report lodged against him by PAS Youth.

“In this country, people can lodge police reports. The opposition are all very good at lodging police reports. This is what is happening.. a lot of things are now based on issues rather than policies,” he said.
